How to start a podcast: Step by Step Guide

So, now that you are 100% sure that you want to create a podcast, it is safe to assume you have a fair idea of what you want to create a podcast on. If not, then the first thing you need to do is grab that pen and paper and start jotting down ideas. The last time we discussed how you need to figure out your plan and the equipment you may need to get to kick start your podcast. Let’s discuss the next steps that you would need to take to make your podcast successful.

Creating Your First Podcast

The planning and equipment stage out of the way, now all you need to do is take the plunge. Go ahead and record your first podcast- don’t worry if it’s not perfect, to be honest, it may be very close to being terrible! You may need to give it a few tries and some ideas may go out the window until you get what you’re looking for.

Your Script

It is important that you outline your script and design an introduction script which will let listeners know what your podcast is all about in the first 30 seconds. Thus, it is absolutely essential that you grab your listener’s attention in this short timeframe. This is the time when they will decide whether your podcast is what they need, and is of interest and relevance to them. Remember, to use catchy phrases and punch lines- we don’t want our listeners to start snoring. Giving a clear but crisp introduction about yourself might be a good idea; make it friendly and informative, so as to engage the audience.

Audio and Music

As it was mentioned earlier, it is pertinent to grab the attention of the audience. In order to grab your listener’s attention, there are two important things that you need to work on. The first being your introduction- the punch line. The second being the music that you decide to use as your introduction and in place of signing out. In order to make your podcast interesting you need to ensure you have:

  1. Attractive Music
  2. Engaging Voice Over

For any music you use, you need to ensure that you seek permission from the owner of the music otherwise it will fall under copyright infringement or you need to find royalty-free music.

The second step in audio requirements is voice over, for which you have two options, you can either record your own voice over or hire a voice-over artist.

Artwork and Descriptions

In order to make your podcast compelling, to get that first click you need to catch the listener’s eye. For that, you need to create an attractive podcast artwork. Your artwork is the first impression for your podcast because listeners will first browse through a list of podcasts before ever listening to them. Therefore, you need to have that pull, likewise in the description as well.
